This folder contains the source material for the production of course notes
for stat_201 and stat_220 taught at SIAST. These were prepared largely by
Robert G. Petry based on notes by Blake Friesen.

To compile this document requires a complete installation of latex with
assorted special packages as well as the asymptote program which generates
some of the plots.

On the ubuntu version of Linux the latex can be installed by the packages
texlive
texlive-latex-recommended
texlive-latex-extra
texlive-games

Asymptote is installed via the
asymptote
package

You also likely should edit the document with a real text editor such as emacs
(installable via the emacs package). emacs is latex-aware and will highlight
the commands and comments with different colours, making editing much easier.

The <file>.fig files are created using the free vector drawing program xfig
which is installed via the xfig package. If you edit an image you will
want to not only save it but export it as "combined PDF/LaTeX (both parts)".

To produce the document requires several runs of latex. At minimum do
pdflatex file.tex (where file is the core file, such as descriptive_stats)
Several runs may be required to get references correct.
If you make changes to the asymptote code within the document (or you have
deleted the support pdf files that were in this directory) then you have to
run the asymptote program after running pdflatex the first time. The first
pass of pdflatex produces the asymptote source files, then asymptote compiles
this into pictures and then a final run of pdflatex includes the pictures.

Thus a complete compile requires

pdflatex file.tex
asy file
pdflatex file.tex

(Note the asymptote command is actually "asy".)

Finally note that these stats packages have been designed for use in several
courses. To compile the different versions, just edit file.tex and scroll
down to the line
% Set the course to compile here:
\setcounter{coursecounter}{\eddt}

and replace \eddt with the command corresponding to the course (\eddt, \cew,
\geo). These make changes to the title pages and unit numbers, etc. and even
the content. (\eddt has only a light version of the descriptive stats
course.) Custom content and examples can be made by using these switches
in the document.

After producing the document for the specific course you may wish to rename
the pdf so that it won't be overwritten on subsequent compile of another course.
eg.
mv file.pdf file_eddt.pdf

Note that some versions of the document may produce auxilliary files which
generate errors when switching document types. If this occurs, remove these
files first before compiling the document:
rm file.aux
rm file.ans
rm file.toc
