This directory contains the source for producing the book
Calculus II
by Robert Petry, Fotini Labropulu and Iqbal Husain. The produced document is
called
calculus_II_textbook.pdf

Main Files:

master.tex: This is the main document.

calculussymbols.tex: Symbol definitions relevant to the document

localcalculus.asy: Asymptote function definitions used included in some
asymptote figures.

layout.tex and textbooktools.tex: Definitions and settings for configuring
the structure of the textbook

Other .tex files in the top level directory are mainly chapters included by
master.tex

Note that several files (calculussymbols.tex, layout.tex and textbooktools.tex)
are actually symbolic links to specific versions of those files. If you have
downloaded this document onto an older filesystem which cannot do such links
you can either copy or rename the version files to be the same name without
the version number.

Folders that contain problems are labelled in caps with no spaces.

COMPILATION

A) Compiling by script

Some shell scripts have been included in this directory which could be
run on a Linux (Unix) system. They simply call pdflatex an
appropriate number of times and the graphics program asy and fig2pdf if
necessary. Even if you don't want (or can't) use them take a look at
them to see what steps need to be followed. Here is a brief summary
of the commands.

compile : Compiles the document from scratch to produce master.pdf .
Assuming a successful compile it copies master.pdf to the current
directory's name appended by .pdf .

compilel : Does a "light compile" which is sufficient if the graphic
files have already been produced or were downloaded. If you have done
the latter then asymptote and fig2ps does not need to be run (or
installed).

clean : Removes all compiled documents and extra files including
master.pdf It does not delete however the copied document whose name
is generated from the directory name. In this way one can clean the
directory and retain the compiled document for circulation. As well
on a failed compile the last successful compile is retained.

cleanl : Does a light cleaning in that it removes all the compiled
documents and extra files except for the generated graphics files. It
deletes master.pdf but retains the copy based on the directory name.

Both versions of the compile executables run their corresponding clean
executables to ensure there are no issues with other files.

B) Compiling using latexmk

If you want to work with the document a more efficient means to do so
is to use latexmk which is available as a Linux package or with tex
distributions. Just run

latexmk

to produce the output. The latexmkrc file in this directory informs
latexmk how to work with the graphics files so they don't get
constantly regenerated and compiled. If you also use the -pvc option
you can have it open a viewer for you. The latexmkrc file is
configured to open the evince viewer for you. If you do not wish to
use that viewer remore or change the following lines (between the
dashed lines) from the latexmkrc file in this directory.
------------
# This makes evince the default pdf viewer if you run -pv or -pvc option
$pdf_previewer = "start evince";
$pdf_update_method = 0;
------------
Removing the lines entirely will cause -pvc to default to the xpdf viewer.

The latexmk executable is configured to create a pdf document by default.
If you wish to create a dvi document then comment out the line
-------------
$pdf_mode = 1;
-------------
You can then run the command dvips to generate postscript output and ps2pdf
if you want to generate a .pdf document using this older mechanism.

C) Compiling using auctex

The included files contain the auctex markup so that they know where the
master document is. New documents can can be appended manually with this
information by auctex by "C-c_" (control-C,underscore) and entering the master
document name master, or, if in a subdirectory ../master
One should then be able to generate master.pdf from within auctex while
editing any of its latex files.

Note however that auctex does not generate the included graphics files in
the graphics directory and these will first need to be either compiled once
to produce the pdf's or downloaded.
